Description
This training focuses on equipping participants with the knowledge and tools to support youth experiencing mental health emergencies. It examines the factors that contribute to crises, including trauma, stress, and underlying mental health conditions, and highlights how these challenges uniquely affect young people. Participants will learn to recognize the signs of trauma and mental health crises, explore the alarming trends in youth mental health such as rising rates of teen depression and suicide, and understand the role of social media and other stressors. Practical strategies for fostering resilience, identifying protective factors, and utilizing community-based resources are emphasized, along with guidance on determining when emergency care is necessary

After completing this training, you will be to:
- Identify Manifestations of Mental Health Crises: By the end of the training, participants will be able to identify at least five different ways in which mental health crises can manifest in individuals, demonstrating an understanding of the diverse expressions of these crises.
- Recognize Triggers of Mental Health Crises: Participants will be able to recognize and explain at least three key factors that can trigger mental health crises, including stress, trauma, and substance abuse.
- Understand Exacerbating Factors: By the conclusion of the training, participants will be able to describe how underlying mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder, can exacerbate mental health crises, providing examples to illustrate their points.
- Analyze Case Scenarios: Participants will be able to analyze case scenarios involving mental health crises, identifying potential triggers and manifestations while discussing appropriate responses and interventions based on the training content.
- Define Trauma: By the end of the training, participants will be able to define trauma, explaining how it can be characterized as an event or series of events that are physically or emotionally harmful or life-threatening.
- Identify Lasting Effects of Trauma: Participants will be able to identify at least three lasting adverse effects of trauma on individuals' functioning and well-being, including mental, physical, social, emotional, or spiritual aspects.
- Recognize Manifestations of Trauma: By the conclusion of the training, participants will be able to describe at least four different ways that trauma can manifest in individuals, demonstrating an understanding of the varied responses to traumatic experiences.
- Assess Individual Responses to Trauma: Participants will be able to assess and discuss individual differences in responses to trauma, considering factors such as background, personality, and support systems, in order to foster a more empathetic approach in their interactions.
- Understanding the Scope of the Youth Mental Health Crisis: Learn about the alarming trends in youth mental health, including clinical depression, suicide rates, and the impact of social media, as highlighted by recent CDC statistics and national reports.
- Recognizing Mental Health Emergencies in Children: Identify key warning signs and symptoms of mental health crises, including behavioral changes, self-harm, and psychotic symptoms, that warrant immediate attention or intervention.
- Exploring Community-Based Support Options Examine: alternative resources to emergency care, such as primary care physicians, school-based services, and state helplines, and understand their role in providing timely support.
