Full course description

Cancer health disparities is defined by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) as “adverse differences in cancer incidence (new cases), cancer prevalence (all existing cases), morbidity (cancer-related health complications), cancer mortality (deaths), cancer survivorship, and the burden of cancer or related health conditions that exist among specific populations.”  Community engagement is one of several approaches undertaken to reduce cancer and tobacco-related disparities experienced among populations with low socioeconomic (SES) characteristics (including medically underserved populations) as well as economically disadvantaged communities throughout the nation.

This webcast is designed to provide an overview of cancer disparities and the role of community engagement from diverse perspectives and settings focused on populations with low socioeconomic status characteristics.

Participants will learn more about how organizations may define communities differently and identify some overlapping factors relative to geography-frontier, rural and metropolitan/urban communities.

Guest speakers and topics include:

  • Dr. Kala Visvanathan from the Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center will present on breast cancer disparities along the continuum
  • Avonne E. Connor, PhD will provide insight and highlight additional opportunities for community engagement
  • Eric Rothermel, YMCA-Pennsylvania Harrisburg Area- Northern Dauphin County Branch will share tips from their working partnership that successfully engaged community members with the goal to increase tobacco cessation support during insurance enrollment.
  • Susan Vileta, from Iowa’s Johnson County Department of Public Health will share examples of community engagement strategies implemented to promote tobacco cessation among populations seeking or enrolling in the Health Insurance Marketplace as a means to address cancer disparities related to tobacco use.
