This training provides an overview of the Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act (DVSJA) and its impact on sentencing reform for domestic violence survivors in New York State. It explains how the law allows for reduced sentences for survivors who committed offenses as a result of their abuse, outlines eligibility criteria, and examines legal and systemic barriers to its implementation. The session also discusses advocacy efforts, challenges in proving eligibility, and the importance of trauma-informed legal approaches.
