Full course description

Description

Trauma-informed care is an essential approach for Community Health Workers (CHWs) supporting individuals experiencing homelessness. This model prioritizes safety, trustworthiness, and choice while avoiding re-traumatization. Cultural competence plays a critical role in building trust with homeless populations, as many face barriers such as stigma, financial difficulties, and lack of transportation when accessing services. Unlike traditional care models, trauma-informed care acknowledges the widespread impact of trauma and integrates it into service delivery. Understanding the effects of trauma—such as difficulty forming relationships—helps CHWs provide more effective and compassionate care.
